Calming no-cook lavender play dough

Here is a great kids indoor activity that keeps them and us calm.

Play based learning

Today we made a batch of lavender no-cook play dough. The kids mixed as much as they could on their own and I finished up the kneading process as they patiently (not) waited.


The proof is in the pudding as they say. I am currently sitting at my kitchen bench as they play with the play dough, no talking at all. They seem absolutely relaxed and chilled, totally engaged and in a zen like state. While I was kneading the dough I myself was feeling relaxed.


Recipe

I used a no-cook recipe, available on many sites if you google. It is a simple and fast recipe.

  • 1 cup of plain flour

  • 1/2 cup of table salt

  • 2 Tbs of cream of tartar

  • 1 tbs of vegetable oil

  • 1/2 teaspoon of lavender oil (about 15 drops)

  • 3/4 cup of boiling water

  • Food colouring if desired. We used red and blue, however I should add more next time to get a nice purple colour.

  • I made a double batch for two kids.

Mix all ingredients except the lavender oil, hot water and food colouring. Combined the other ingredients first and then add to the flour mixture. Knead on a flat surface for about 5 minutes.
